Biography

One of Tampa Bay’s hottest emerging musicians, Mike Ratza is an accomplished saxophonist and recording artist.  His work spans the genres of rock, funk, reggae, blues, and jazz.  A naturally talented performer, Mike strives to define the voice of saxophone in modern music.

Born November 18, 1980 in Dunedin, Florida, Michael Christopher Ratza developed a deep appreciation for both visual and performance art.  Fortunate to be in an area where free concerts and events were frequently held, Mike opened his ears to all types of music.

After receiving a guitar as a Christmas gift, Mike began to teach himself songs by ear.  Only three years later he was a paid performer.  At age 22, Mike taught himself how to play the saxophone and quickly excelled and thrived in the art of improvisation.

The love of improvisation brings spontaneity to Mike’s style and is an integral part of his playing. Mike believes that, “A musician’s greatest tool is not the instrument that they play, but rather the ears they hear with.”
